Kitikmeot Region
Kivalliq and Kitikmeot Regions
The Kivalliq region is found along the west coast of Hudson’s Bay. Rankin Inlet is the administrative centre. The Kitikmeot region is the western most region of Nunavut. Cambridge Bay is the administrative centre. Cambridge Bay and Rankin Inlet each have a regional health centre, which offers an expanded range of services. Family physicians are based in these centres, with regular visits to communities. Medical practice in the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regions requires physicians to work closely with community health nurses, seeing patients referred by them, doing antenatal care (but no elective deliveries), providing support by phone or telehealth to the other health centers, arranging specialty referrals, and participating on the occasional medevac. There is a birthing center in Rankin Inlet supported by midwives. The family physicians have no direct involvement in the center but may be called upon for assistance. Kivalliq patients who need advanced care are referred to Churchill or Winnipeg. Kivalliq-based physicians benefit from the strong support of the Northern Medical Unit at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Kitikmeot patients who need advanced care are usually referred to Stanton Hospital in Yellowknife, although circumstances occasionally require transfer directly to Edmonton. Kitikmeot family physicians are supported by Stanton’s Emergency Room physicians and other specialists there. Family physicians in these two regions will be expected to provide both ambulatory care and emergency care.
